2981 pull A Thin Veil across Manchester’s grey post-punk skyline

2981’s A Thin Veil arrives on 7 June with almost no wasted motion, and that works in its favour. The Manchester post-punk band keep things brief, sharp and atmospheric, offering one track that feels more like a doorway than a full tour of the house. Recorded, produced, mixed and mastered at Nave Studios in Leeds by Andy Hawkins, the release has a clear industrial-Northern frame without needing to overplay the mythology. The title is doing useful work too. A thin veil is a boundary you can almost see through but not quite cross, which is exactly where the best post-punk often lives: between confession and distance, between movement and dread, between the clean line of a bass part and the murk around it. 2981 sound like a band interested in restraint rather than spectacle, and in a release world full of oversized statements, that minimalism feels quietly effective.
