The Black Wizards are back after seven years, and Loose sounds like a very appropriate title for a band trying to shake something out of its own nervous system. The Porto trio have announced Force Majeure & The Acts of God, their first album since Reflections, and the new single points toward a sharper direction than their earlier doom and stoner rock weight. Joana Brito frames Loose around anxious thought loops and being trapped inside your own head, while the band connects that private tension to the public grind of low pay, bad work and a world constantly generating new reasons to scream. That is fertile territory for heavy rock. The interesting twist is the wobbly synth, which gives the track a different kind of pressure: less bulldozer, more unstable elevator. The Black Wizards sound angry, yes, but not hopeless. The chorus still wants to punch a hole in the ceiling.
