Bob Dylan’s touring guitar chair spins again and Joel Paterson walks into the Austin spotlight

Bob Dylan’s 30 June band update is not indie in the strict genre sense, but it is very much music-news oxygen: the touring guitar chair has been spinning, and now Joel Paterson has stepped into the spotlight. Stereogum reports that Dylan was joined at his Moody Amphitheater show in Austin by the Chicago jazz and blues musician, following a month of unexpected guitarist movement that included Julian Lage replacing Doug Lancio and Bob Britt publicly exiting with a “Sayonara Bobby” post. Paterson brings his own interesting mythology, including pedal-steel work with the Cactus Blossoms in Twin Peaks Season 3. Dylan’s live band has always been part road unit, part weather system, and this latest shift fits the pattern. Nobody should pretend to know whether Paterson is permanent. With Dylan, even the personnel can feel like another verse nobody wrote down.
