Burnt Bakarak pours Leftover Gravy over Detroit beat science and calls it dinner

Burnt Bakarak’s Leftover Gravy gets a spotlight in Bandcamp Daily’s June hip-hop roundup, and the title is doing delicious work before the beat even drops. Released via Detroit’s Common and Normal collective, the 15-track project is described as beat science from self-proclaimed beat nerds, built from rugged drums, melancholy loops, sleazy bass, vibraphone moods and weeping guitar fragments. That is a very strong meal. Instrumental hip-hop can sometimes feel like background music when it is too polite, but Leftover Gravy sounds like it has enough grease, grit and emotional residue to stand on its own. Bakarak’s trick seems to be teasing feeling out of pared-down materials, turning loops into little situations rather than static wallpaper. The gravy may be leftover, but the heat is very much current.
