Canaries send Horsepower and Soma racing through the fuzz-pop slipstream

Canaries arrive in the 20 June cycle with Horsepower and Soma, and the Richmond band sound like they have found the sweet spot between old fuzz-pop electricity and very present-tense DIY urgency. Their sound sits near the early-90s zone of Velocity Girl, Bettie Serveert, Sonic Youth flashes and Yo La Tengo-adjacent melodic rush, but the songs do not feel like museum cosplay. They feel like a band discovering how much speed, haze and melody can still do when they are pushed through a small room and a real pulse. Horsepower and Soma work as a compact calling card: bright, rough, slightly dizzy and exactly the kind of thing that makes you want to keep an eye on a young guitar band before everyone else catches up.
