Belgian electronic-pop collaborators Charlotte Adigéry and Bolis Pupul have announced Mainland Madinina, their second full-length album together, accompanied by new single "From Healer To Dealer". The announcement follows October release "Googoo Gaga" and marks another chapter in a partnership that began with Adigéry's debut EP in 2017.
Their internationally acclaimed 2022 album Topical Dancer established the duo's reputation for combining inventive electronic production with sharp observations about contemporary society. Mainland Madinina was developed in Ghent and Martinique, where Adigéry has family connections through her mother. The title references Madinina, the Indigenous name for Martinique. The recording process followed major personal changes for both musicians, including becoming parents and Adigéry experiencing the death of her mother. Belgian electronic duo Soulwax returned as mentors and co-producers, continuing a creative relationship established during the previous album.
"From Healer To Dealer" runs for approximately eight and a half minutes, presenting an extended electronic arrangement built around two fictional narcissistic personalities communicating through fashionable buzzwords. The result examines the increasingly absurd language associated with self-improvement, personal branding and contemporary social interaction. Adigéry and Pupul have consistently demonstrated that dance music can be intellectually playful without sacrificing rhythmic appeal.
Their new material suggests that the forthcoming album will continue exploring the uncomfortable relationship between personal identity and modern culture. Apparently the wellness industry has finally inspired an electronic track long enough to accommodate an entire motivational seminar, although considerably more enjoyable.
