Chelsea Street Beggars punch Hollywood in the teeth and keep the guitars ringing

Chelsea Street Beggars’ It’s Not Hollywood, Hollywood $ucks arrives on 23 June from Los Angeles with a title that has clearly had enough of the industry brochure. The release sits across rock, Americana rock, alt-folk, classic rock, hard rock, indie pop rock, roots rock and modern rock, which gives it a broad but very LA-ready palette: dusty guitars, big-city frustration, hooks, grit and probably at least one eye-roll at the glamour machine. The title works because independent rock in Los Angeles often has to wrestle with the difference between the myth of the city and the daily reality of trying to make art inside it. Hollywood promises gold and gives you parking tickets. This album sounds like a refusal to play polite. It wants the roots, the amps, the bruises and the right to call the sign overrated.
