Cold Court raise their Hands Up EP like a genre-breaking emergency signal

Cold Court’s Hands Up EP was tucked into Pitchfork’s 20 June new-albums guide, but the description alone makes it worth a separate catch-up entry. A debut EP that combines noise, funk and rock is already operating in a dangerous little playground. The title Hands Up can mean surrender, celebration, threat or dancefloor command depending on the room, which gives the release a nice unstable charge. Cold Court sound like the kind of project that wants to break the polite agreement between genres and see what happens when rhythm and abrasion start arguing in public. Noise can flatten a song if used lazily, but when pushed against funk, it can become body music with splinters. That is a useful recipe for a debut: disruptive, physical and not particularly interested in explaining itself twice.
