Australian artist daine releases "Wishing Well" today, another preview of debut album In Endless Awe & Agony, due November 6 through Pack Records. Opening with softly strummed guitar and notably exposed vocals, the track meditates on value, fate and the irritating reality that material wealth cannot protect anybody from uncertainty, grief or emotional hunger.
That theme fits an album organised around a Jungian process of confronting and integrating the self, although listeners fortunately do not need to complete an introductory psychology course before pressing play. In Endless Awe & Agony grew from an exceptionally difficult period involving bereavement, the end of a long relationship and time spent in psychiatric care, followed by daine's gradual return to performing and creating.
The album also represents a sonic shift away from heavier vocal processing: for the first time, daine sings without Auto-Tune across the record, making the performances deliberately more exposed. "Wishing Well" follows "Product of Profit," "I Used To Kill," "love love" and "PQC," while extensive Australian and North American headline dates surround the release. Money cannot apparently solve life's deeper problems. It can, however, still purchase a concert ticket.
