Dawn Richard releases Creole Culture today through Merge Records, completing a deeply personal musical trilogy exploring her relationship with New Orleans. The eleven-track album follows New Breed from 2019 and Second Line from 2021, records that examined her hometown partly through the experiences of her father and mother. Creole Culture places Richard's own perspective at the centre.
The project draws from her identity as a Black and Native American woman while celebrating the extraordinary cultural mixture that has shaped New Orleans music. Electronic production, R&B, jazz, soul and hip-hop coexist throughout the record, supported by live musicians and guest appearances from artists including Big Freedia and Durand Bernarr. One particularly personal moment is "Groove City," a reinterpretation of a 1979 recording connected to her father's band Chocolate Milk.
Richard has spent much of her post-major-label career challenging the boundaries separating popular music from experimental production. Creole Culture demonstrates that independence can also mean having the freedom to explore family history without simplifying it for commercial convenience. The album celebrates New Orleans without ignoring the difficult circumstances that have shaped the city.
