California experimental-metal band Deafheaven have unexpectedly released At Work in the Fields of the Bomb, a three-track EP inspired by photographer Robert Del Tredici's 1987 book documenting the production of nuclear weapons. The project represents the band's first new material since 2025 album Lonely People with Power.
The EP examines the disturbing contrast between the catastrophic consequences of nuclear warfare and the ordinary decisions that make such destruction possible. Deafheaven have spent years challenging the boundaries separating black metal, shoegaze and atmospheric alternative rock. Unlike Lonely People with Power, which included outside guests, the three new tracks feature no outside collaborators.
The band will continue touring with Mastodon through the remainder of 2026. At Work in the Fields of the Bomb demonstrates that heavy music can address political and historical subjects without reducing them to slogans. The underlying question is unsettling: how do ordinary human systems produce extraordinary destruction? Deafheaven provide an uncompromising soundtrack for the investigation.
