Wiltshire-born alt-folk newcomer Dermot Henry releases Aiming Torches At The Sun on 15 May via Adventure Recordings and Island Records UK. The debut EP collects My Favourite Book Is One I’ve Read A Bunch, Little Rib, All The Things, Super Computer and Dead Man’s Dog, introducing an artist who seems interested in love, absurdity and the strange scale of being human.
Henry’s background already reads like a folk tale in miniature: raised on his parents’ records, busking in Paris during a year abroad, then meeting a future collaborator after jumping onstage in a bar to help someone remember the words to Elizabeth Cotten’s Freight Train. That kind of origin suits the music.
The lead track is described by Henry as a love song written while separated from the people he loves, while Little Rib steps into a more cosmic absurdity, thinking about molecules, connection and the fact that all of this is happening on a rock in nothingness. Recorded in Frome with Dom Monks, whose credits include Big Thief, Michael Kiwanuka and Laura Marling, the EP places Henry in a thoughtful alt-folk lane with real promise.
