DIIV have announced their next album, 'Zirp!', using a deliberately mysterious hotline campaign rather than a conventional press launch in shoegaze and alternative rock.

Produced by A. G. Cook, the record will arrive on 30 October and follows 2024’s Frog in Boiling Water. The collaboration immediately raises intriguing questions. DIIV’s recent work has emphasised dense guitar layers, shoegaze distortion and a feeling of emotional corrosion, while Cook is known for reshaping pop music through artificial textures, extreme digital processing and unexpected structural decisions.

Bringing those approaches together could push the band into territory that is recognisably DIIV but less dependent on established guitar-music language. 'Zirp!' also emerges after a turbulent period in which frontman Zachary Cole Smith and his family lost their Altadena home in the California wildfires. The band addressed that experience on 'Return of Youth', released in 2025. After such upheaval, the playful telemarketing imagery surrounding 'Zirp!' suggests DIIV are responding through reinvention, dark humour and a renewed interest in what alternative music might become.
