Dinosaur Jr.’s Several Got Away keeps buzzing into 1 July as the first taste of There Near, the band’s 13th album, due 28 August via Jagjaguwar. J Mascis reportedly sought out a 1970s Mesa Boogie MK 1 amplifier like the one he played through on Dinosaur’s debut four decades ago, giving himself the Rick Rubin-style advice to get back to the first-album sound. That detail is perfect because Dinosaur Jr. have always made nostalgia sound less like memory and more like volume still physically hanging in the air. Several Got Away arrives with the comfort of a familiar guitar language, but the best thing about this band is that familiarity does not have to mean laziness. The fuzz, ache and solos still carry human mess. The amp ghost may be old, but it clearly still knows where the loud switch is.
