British experimental indie group Django Django have released their sixth studio album Doveland through Clouds Hill, introducing twelve compositions inspired by an unusual internet legend. The album takes its title from a supposedly vanished American town that appears on no maps, despite stories from people convinced they once lived there. This strange premise provided the musicians with a framework for exploring memory, absence and the difficulty of distinguishing personal experience from imagination.
Rather than extending the restless stylistic experimentation of previous albums, Django Django approached the project with a more focused musical direction. The group worked in the German countryside with producer Nick McCarthy, formerly of Franz Ferdinand, and producer and composer Polly Ester. The resulting material combines atmospheric arrangements with the band's familiar interest in rhythm, electronic textures and psychedelic songwriting.
Tracks include "Meteorite", "Cameos", "Still Life", "Year Of The Snake", "Quicksand", "Left Adrift" and "Dirty Hotel Blues". "Little Me" features Hak Baker, while "Feel Alright" includes Max Pope. The record also explores grief and the passing of time, providing emotional weight beneath its imaginative central concept. Doveland is available in digital and physical formats, including an independent-record-store vinyl edition.
The project demonstrates how an apparently absurd piece of online folklore can inspire a surprisingly personal musical journey. Apparently finding an imaginary town is considerably easier than deciding whether an unfamiliar collection of musical memories belongs to the past, the present or somebody else's imagination.
