Do Nothing’s Friend World is now on the horizon, and the first preview, Stars, suggests the Nottingham quartet are still very good at turning social discomfort into wiry guitar music. Announced on 11 June, the album is due 6 November via Submarine Cat Records and follows their 2023 debut Snake Sideways. Chris Bailey has framed Stars around ambition, fame and the ways being visible does not necessarily make people happy. That is classic Do Nothing territory: sharp suits, awkward motion, nervous humour and the uneasy knowledge that modern life is one long performance review. The band’s appeal has always been in how they make post-punk feel theatrical without turning it into empty posing. Stars sounds like a song about the glamour trap from people who know the trap is also funny, sad and extremely hard to resist.
