Elena Tonra returns to her Ex:Re project with "Sleep," the second preview of Save As, due October 30 through 4AD. Written while Tonra was alone in a Paris hotel, the song still carries part of that original demo inside its finished form: an acoustic-guitar fragment was processed through a vocoder and turned into a looping texture beneath drum machine rhythm. The result feels like hearing a party through the wall while remaining unsure whether joining it would improve matters.
Tonra, best known as the voice of Daughter, describes "Sleep" as something she could actually dance to, which is a notable development for a songwriter whose catalogue has rarely been accused of excessive nightclub optimism. Save As is the second Ex:Re album and was not originally planned at all.
Tonra returned to producer Fabian Prynn in 2023 with several sketches and gradually discovered that another record was taking shape. Josephine Stephenson, Hinako Omori, Ben Reed and Jethro Fox also contribute across the album. "Sleep" arrives alongside a live session recorded at 4AD's London studio. Apparently insomnia has finally acquired a rhythm section.
