Eyes of Bel releases "Scorpio Rising" today, previewing seven-track EP End of an Era ahead of its November 13 arrival. Built around queer sexual awakening and astrological identity, the song turns desire into something simultaneously intimate, difficult and empowering. Bel describes it as one of the record's most personally important pieces because writing directly about that desire required crossing emotional territory that had previously been easier to avoid.

Appropriately, "Scorpio Rising" arrives just before Scorpio season, giving astrology fans an opportunity to feel extremely organised. End of an Era deals more broadly with love, loss, sexual identity, survival and the strange mixture of pain and hope accompanying personal change. The material was created with Cheekbone, Robert Downie and Tony Buchen during a period when Bel was questioning what remained after letting go of an older version of herself.

The resulting alternative pop music intentionally refuses simple emotional categories: vulnerability and strength are allowed to occupy the same song without somebody forcing one of them to leave. "Scorpio Rising" is therefore less interested in predicting somebody's romantic future than examining the moment they finally admit what they want. Considerably more useful than most horoscopes.
