Irish alternative-rock band post-punk favourites Fontaines D.C. have officially released "Where Is Gone?", their highly anticipated collaboration with acclaimed Spanish singer Rosalía. The single arrives ahead of the band's fifth studio album Dopamine Chamber, scheduled for October 16 through XL Recordings. It also marks the first featured guest appearance on a Fontaines D.C. album, making the collaboration an important milestone in the group's increasingly adventurous musical development.
Rather than attempting to combine two contrasting artists through an aggressively commercial pop arrangement, "Where Is Gone?" embraces a dramatic orchestral approach. Sweeping strings, echoing guitars and atmospheric production create something resembling the soundtrack to an imaginary James Bond film in which everybody spends considerably more time contemplating existential uncertainty than chasing villains. Frontman Grian Chatten's distinctive vocal delivery provides a fascinating contrast with Rosalía's expressive singing, while the arrangement gradually expands toward a powerful emotional climax.
Guitarist Carlos O'Connell has explained that his admiration for Rosalía partly reflects her commitment to preserving Spanish musical traditions, something he considers spiritually connected to Fontaines D.C.'s relationship with Irish culture. The collaboration demonstrates how international musical influences can produce genuinely interesting results without sacrificing artistic identity. Fontaines D.C. have travelled a considerable distance from the urgent arrangements of their 2019 debut Dogrel, and their latest single suggests they have absolutely no intention of returning to familiar territory.
The album arrives Friday via XL Recordings, while an extensive international tour includes Amsterdam's Ziggo Dome on November 10. Fans tracking modern guitar experimentation can explore our dedicated post-punk category and news archive for continuous coverage of album announcements and tour updates.
