Brighton experimental-pop veterans Fujiya & Miyagi have released New Shiny Object through their Impossible Objects of Desire label, presenting nine compositions that explore the relationship between electronic rhythms, understated melodies and emotionally direct songwriting. The album follows an extensive career built around influences from krautrock, electronic pop and unconventional guitar music.
Rather than pursuing increasingly complicated production, the group initially approached the new material as a project that could be performed directly by the musicians together. The resulting arrangements retain a sense of immediacy while incorporating the precise electronic textures associated with the band's established sound.
Frontman David Best explores subjects including parenthood, personal loss and the complicated process of becoming more aware of life's limitations. Earlier singles "Lowest Common Denominator", "No Green Light" and "Elasticated Waste" introduced different aspects of the collection's musical identity. Their forthcoming live schedule includes performances in Brighton, Bristol, London, Leeds, Glasgow and Manchester during January and February 2027, followed by a Barcelona appearance in March.
New Shiny Object demonstrates how experienced independent artists can revisit familiar creative techniques without becoming trapped by nostalgia. The title also provides an amusing reflection on the music industry's perpetual enthusiasm for discovering the next exciting trend.
