Canadian alternative-rock project General Assembly has announced its debut album Fundamental Balancing, scheduled for December 4 through House of Wonders Records, alongside the premiere of lead single "Bad Habit". The project represents a bold creative restart for songwriter Ryan David Roberts, who previously co-founded American pop-punk staples Cartel and contributed to their defining early records.
After stepping away from Cartel, Roberts eventually relocated to Winnipeg, Manitoba, where he began writing material outside the commercial expectations of mainstream pop-punk. Fundamental Balancing took shape from roughly thirty compositions brought to Winnipeg's House of Wonders studio, allowing collaborative experimentation to whittle the collection down to eleven cohesive tracks.
Producer Fuhr handled production, engineering, and mixing duties, with mastering completed by Donavan Ostapowich. The recordings feature guest performances from Jasmine Henry, Arielle Beaupré, Eric Ross, and Luis Almeida. Single "Bad Habit" evolved organically during studio sessions, nudging Roberts to embrace looser, more textural songwriting across tracks like "Rang Rang", "Lobotomy", "Loose Screws", "Slow Dance", and "Weekend".
General Assembly will celebrate the release with a December 5 performance at Winnipeg's The Handsome Daughter, supported by Naked Elevator Ride and Merin. The album will be released across digital platforms and limited-edition cassette. Read more indie rock announcements in our news section.
