Utah-based Trevor Free, recording as Good Grim, releases "Helium" today, stripping away some of the dream-pop haze associated with previous work for something warmer, rawer and considerably more direct. Produced with Jackson Jenkins, the song explores an unhealthy emotional cycle in which the desire to repair something repeatedly collides with the fear that the damage has already changed everybody involved.
Its nuclear imagery gives the title additional meaning: hydrogen becoming helium under enormous pressure is an irreversible transformation, a neat metaphor for relationships that cannot simply return to their original state after enough force has been applied. The production mirrors that idea by resisting excessive polish. Warm instrumentation, restrained pacing and slide guitar allow imperfections to remain visible rather than covering them with atmospheric effects.
That slide part has its own pleasingly indie origin story: after Free and Jenkins struggled to find the right contribution, neighbour Mark Lantham was summoned, walked over and reportedly captured what they needed in a single take. "Helium" is not a song about perfect healing. It is about becoming something different after the fracture. Physics teachers may dispute the emotional interpretation; the guitar sounds excellent.
