Grimes has released "Accelerando," the first single from forthcoming album Psy Opera, marking her return to a full-length project after 2020's Miss Anthropocene. The new record will be released through her own independent label, Nazgul Recording LLC, following her departure from Columbia Records.
Although a release date has not yet been confirmed, the project is expected to explore artificial intelligence, internet culture, relationships, religion and the increasingly complicated relationship between humanity and technology. "Accelerando" arrives alongside a trailer featuring futuristic religious imagery and a new online community called Eve Is Online in an ambitious electronic art-pop framework.
The new single continues Grimes' longstanding interest in combining experimental electronic production with unusual conceptual storytelling. Whether the resulting album will clarify her artistic philosophy or make everything considerably stranger remains to be seen. Given the title and the promotional imagery, betting on the second possibility seems entirely reasonable.
