Brooklyn indie-rock group Grumpy are preparing to release Unfindable Ring on October 23 through Bayonet Records, with a newly published October 19 interview offering an unusually revealing look at the musicians and their creative relationships. Led by songwriter Heaven Schmitt, the six-piece combines alternative rock, electronic experimentation and folk-influenced songwriting with an approach that frequently balances emotional vulnerability against unexpected humour.
Grumpy began as Schmitt's solo project before developing into a collaborative band whose interpersonal history is considerably more complicated than most conventional musical biographies. Several members have previously been romantically involved with Schmitt, including drummer Austin Arnold, while bassist Ellie Long is his current partner. Rather than allowing those relationships to become an obstacle, the musicians have incorporated their shared experiences into the group's creative identity.
Unfindable Ring explores the difficulty of expressing love through grand gestures when everyday affection often proves more meaningful. The record was developed in a modest rehearsal space around the Bushwick and Ridgewood neighbourhoods, where the musicians experimented with layered electronics, distorted guitars and unconventional vocal arrangements. Songs discussed in the new interview include the title track, "yr bitch", "OBL", "25" and "Queens". The material moves between shoegaze, alt-country, electronic pop and intimate acoustic songwriting without becoming overly concerned about maintaining a single musical identity.
Schmitt also discusses the influence of Death Cab for Cutie and Joni Mitchell on his approach to composition. Grumpy's forthcoming album suggests that modern romance remains an excellent source of musical inspiration, particularly when the songwriter is surrounded by people who already know exactly what happened. Group rehearsals must occasionally resemble extremely productive therapy sessions. Check out more indie rock releases in our indie rock directory.
