29 October 2026 – Guided By Voices Announce Their 45th Album Speculation and Gossip Because Apparently Forty-Four Wasn't Enough

American indie-rock institution Guided By Voices have announced Speculation and Gossip, their astonishing forty-fifth studio album, scheduled for January 22, 2027, through Guided By Voices Inc. The announcement is accompanied by "Designed For Use", the first single from the forthcoming sixteen-track collection.

The record follows Crawlspace of the Pantheon, released earlier in 2026, demonstrating that Robert Pollard and his collaborators continue operating at a creative pace that would exhaust most musicians before breakfast. Pollard has explained that the new material developed during a period of fascination with Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and surrealist ideas.

Rather than recording together in the same room, the musicians returned to a remote collaborative process that allowed individual members to experiment independently with arrangements and production techniques. Pollard encouraged the group to explore post-punk, progressive rock, psychedelic music and pop influences, seeking a brighter and more varied sound than their previous album. The resulting tracklist includes "My Cartoon", "Satan and the New Temptations", "Designed For Use", "Answer Asparagus" and "Otherworldly Bathroom Fixtures".

Guided By Voices have remained influential within independent rock through their combination of unconventional songwriting, melodic invention and remarkable productivity. Their latest announcement reinforces the idea that creative longevity does not necessarily require slowing down. Forty-five albums represent a substantial achievement, although Pollard's recording schedule suggests that somebody should probably start preparing the press release for number forty-six.
