Hovvdy’s Blast keeps Big World feeling open, grounded and gently restless

Hovvdy’s Blast entered the week as the second preview of Big World, and it still belongs in the 14 June weekend conversation because the song does what Hovvdy often do best: make small-scale emotional movement feel quietly enormous. The Austin duo have framed the coming album around a more secure and self-aware place in the world, and Blast appears to continue that tone after lead single Try Try Try. Hovvdy’s music rarely needs to sprint. It works through softness, repetition, subtle guitar textures and the sense that two people are slowly explaining adulthood to themselves in harmony. The title Blast sounds more explosive than the band usually behaves, but that contrast is useful. Hovvdy do not need fireworks to make impact. They are better at the kind of slow bloom that sneaks into your week and refuses to leave.
