janis lago’s User: clavicembalo is not a release you casually throw on between emails unless your emails are being sent from a weather station in the Arctic. Released on 7 June through Next Year’s Snow, the album runs over five hours and comes with the energy of a field research document that has started writing songs back at its observers. Tracks like thunderstorm week, commoner song and the three-and-a-half-hour a further inquiry suggest a project that treats time not as a problem, but as the whole medium. The tags around experimental, avant-internet, cryogenic pop and white noise black light are not just decorative weirdness. They describe a sound world where singer-songwriter fragments, shortwave textures, trombone, flute, harmonica and vast duration all become part of one strange machine. It is absolutely not for everyone, which is exactly why it deserves a place in an indie digest. Independent music should still make room for the beautifully excessive.
