Kairo Vail sends The Pulse through dark art-pop electricity

Kairo Vail’s The Pulse arrives with a title that does a lot of useful work before the first beat even hits. Released on 2 June, the Australian project tags the track around alternative rock, dark art pop, divine sleaze, electro rock and indie rock. That is a very specific mood board: neon corridors, black clothing, guitars with eyeliner, synths with teeth and the sense that glamour and unease are sharing the same mirror. The Pulse seems built for that space where rock music becomes more nocturnal and electronic music becomes more bodily. It does not need to choose between dirt and style. It can have both. That makes Kairo Vail worth watching for listeners who like their alternative music theatrical but not empty, polished but still slightly dangerous. Some songs try to explain the darkness. This one appears more interested in switching on the strobe light and letting the shadows move.
