Adelaide nine-piece King of Spain return with "Take Me To Marseille," their first release in three years and the opening taste of a forthcoming EP. The track combines 1970s-inspired soul with R&B, funk, brass, melodic piano, grooving guitar and soaring falsetto, which is roughly what happens when nine musicians decide subtle staffing levels are overrated.
The song began during the pandemic when the group were travel-deprived and throwing European city names into lyrics. Marseille happened to fit and gradually became the entire song's destination. Mixed and mastered by Mario Späte, whose credits include Meg Washington, Tkay Maidza and Ziggy Ramo, the single reconnects a collective whose members have links to acts including Wanderers, Tonix, Hilltop Hoods, Lostwoods, Mane and Eraser Description.
That network of Adelaide musicians helps explain the track's unusually full arrangement: this is music built to sound like people playing together rather than a producer gradually filling rectangles on a laptop screen. King of Spain have previously established themselves on South Australian festival stages, and "Take Me To Marseille" begins what the band describes as its next era. Three years was a long layover. At least the destination sounds worth it.
