American alternative-country institution Lambchop have announced Demoed, a new collaborative EP that reimagines material from their recent album Punching The Clown through performances by an impressive collection of independent musicians. The project arrives digitally on November 5 through Merge Records, with a physical release scheduled for February 5.
Rather than commissioning conventional remixes, Lambchop leader Kurt Wagner invited guest vocalists to perform over original guitar demos created during the album's development. The resulting recordings explore how songs can change when their original author steps away from the microphone. MJ Lenderman introduces the project with a new interpretation of "Weakened", while additional contributors include Alan Sparhawk, Circuit Des Yeux, Channy Leaneagh, Dan Wriggins, Lauren Auder, Flock of Dimes, and More Eaze. Longtime Lambchop collaborator Andrew Broder produced the original demos.
Wagner has explained that the project reflects his interest in allowing the songs themselves to remain central rather than treating the personality of the songwriter as their defining feature. That philosophy challenges an industry increasingly obsessed with personal branding, carefully managed identities and the expectation that every musician must become a permanent social-media personality.
Demoed also demonstrates the strength of collaboration within independent music, bringing together artists from several generations and stylistic backgrounds. The project offers listeners an opportunity to experience familiar compositions through entirely different vocal perspectives. Apparently the secret to making an interesting new Lambchop record involves asking Kurt Wagner to stop singing for a little while. Fortunately, he appears entirely comfortable with the arrangement.
