A tour already packed with alternative-rock history produced a particularly joyful collision in Boston when Liz Phair joined Sleater-Kinney to cover Elastica's 1995 hit 'Connection'. The performance took place during the September 21 stop of their current joint tour at MGM Music Hall and quickly became one of today's most entertaining indie-rock clips.

For the encore, Sleater-Kinney's Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein teamed with Phair to trade vocals and guitar energy on a song that remains one of the sharpest three-minute artefacts of the mid-1990s alternative boom. Frankie Cosmos had opened the show, making the evening's generational indie credentials even stronger.

The collaboration works partly because Phair and Sleater-Kinney emerged from overlapping but distinct corners of that decade's underground, meaning the sight of all three musicians treating an Elastica song like communal karaoke somehow feels both historically logical and pleasantly strange.
