Lorde opens XRAYS and lets the Virgin skeletons walk around in daylight

Lorde’s XRAYS project is a rare pop-star archive drop that feels less like bonus content and more like an emotional X-ray of process. To mark the one-year anniversary of Virgin, she has uploaded 49 demos described as skeletons, alongside photos, notes and artwork ideas from the album’s creation. The interesting thing is not just quantity. It is the philosophy behind the reveal. Lorde frames the materials as a truer view of crookedness, repetition, acne and journey rather than a polished monument to the finished product. That honesty fits Virgin’s raw emotional background, which she also connects to isolation, illness, breakup and the strange transformative force of living inside difficult songs. For independent artists, there is a useful lesson here too: sometimes the unfinished material is not embarrassing evidence. Sometimes it is the real map of how the song survived.
