Independent Byron Bay singer-songwriter Lucy Gallant has unveiled the music video for "Venom," giving the intensely personal single a striking visual chapter ahead of five-track EP Forbidden Fruit on October 9. The song itself arrived September 25, but the video premiered October 3 and is worth treating as a fresh story rather than pretending the single was released again.
Filmed by Michael Reisener and edited by Gallant herself, it moves between a Byron Bay beach at sunset and a tea-tree lake, with Gallant appearing in a Medusa-inspired crown of snakes. The symbolism is hardly shy, but neither is the story behind the song. Gallant wrote "Venom" after losing both parents only six months apart during the pandemic and then experiencing conflict and intimidation while already carrying that grief. Produced by Josh Beattie, the track combines orchestral strings with cinematic pop production, turning the idea of poison into one of refusing to absorb somebody else's cruelty.
Gallant's independent trajectory makes the release especially relevant here: without management, she has built an audience of more than 100,000 across social platforms through grassroots touring in Australia, New Zealand and Europe. Forbidden Fruit arrives next Thursday. Apparently heartbreak, grief, Medusa and DIY career management can all fit inside the same campaign.
