Manchester jazz-punk quartet Maruja have announced The Holy Inadequate, a live album scheduled for November 20 through Music For Nations. Recorded during headline performances at Manchester's Ritz and London's Electric Ballroom, the thirteen-track collection documents the extraordinary intensity that has helped establish the band as one of Britain's most exciting experimental live acts.

Maruja consist of vocalist and guitarist Harry Wilkinson, saxophonist Joseph Carroll, bassist Matt Buonaccorsi and drummer Jacob Hayes. Their music combines post-punk aggression with improvisational jazz, creating arrangements that frequently move between atmospheric passages and explosive instrumental sections. The recordings capture performances supporting the band's 2025 debut album Pain to Power.

That period proved both creatively rewarding and physically demanding, with the group performing 109 concerts while completing and releasing the album. Maruja have spoken openly about the exhaustion associated with maintaining such an intense schedule, explaining that the experience eventually contributed to burnout. The Holy Inadequate therefore represents more than a conventional concert souvenir; it documents the extraordinary commitment required to establish an independent band while highlighting the personal consequences of relentless touring. The tracklist includes "Bloodsport", "Trenches", "Break the Tension", "Zeitgeist", "Thunder", "Saoirse" and "Resisting Resistance". Further concerts are scheduled for 2027, including a Manchester appearance with GOAT.

The live album offers listeners an opportunity to experience Maruja's distinctive musical energy without having to stand directly in front of an extremely enthusiastic saxophonist. Although, admittedly, that is probably where the best part of the concert happens. Find more boundary-pushing British acts in our jazz section and stay updated with our music news.
