Mike D follows Switch Up with What We Got and keeps the solo experiment moving

Mike D released What We Got on 22 May and plays Brooklyn’s Xanadu Roller Arts on 23 May, giving the Beastie Boys member a clear weekend news hook. The track follows Switch Up, his debut solo single, and was recorded during the same sessions with producer Carter Lang and Mike D’s sons, Davis and Skyler Diamond.

That family element continues to make this solo phase feel less like a legacy act trying to manufacture relevance and more like a personal studio chapter that happened to become public. What We Got is also historically interesting because new solo material from a Beastie Boy still carries weight. The last Beastie Boys album remains Hot Sauce Committee Part Two from 2011, and Mike D has not performed with the group since Adam Yauch’s death.

For indie and alternative readers, this is a crossover item rather than a traditional indie-rock release, but it fits because it is rooted in DIY hip-hop history, intergenerational collaboration and the idea of an older artist testing a new format without pretending the past can simply be recreated.
