Los Angeles power-punk duo Mr. Dinkles have released "Brain", a new single introducing their forthcoming five-song EP REZN. The recording explores personal insecurity, financial uncertainty and the difficult experience of pursuing a creative career while questioning whether the sacrifices are worthwhile.
The band consists of guitarist and vocalist Mac Rettig and drummer Rocco Ramos, whose energetic arrangements combine punk rock with garage influences and heavier post-grunge textures. Rettig wrote "Brain" after losing his job following an accusation of theft that he disputes. The sudden loss of income created additional pressure at a time when he was already struggling to establish the band following a move from Seattle to Los Angeles.
Rather than disguising those circumstances behind an exaggerated rock-star personality, Rettig chose to examine them directly through songwriting. The forthcoming EP develops similar themes involving personal expectations, difficult relationships and the struggle to maintain independence while facing financial uncertainty. Independent label Futureless is preparing a vinyl edition combining REZN with the group's previous EP RIPT.
Mr. Dinkles have also announced a November 22 performance at West Hollywood's Troubadour. "Brain" provides an unusually practical glimpse into the financial circumstances surrounding underground music. Musicians frequently receive advice about following dreams, but considerably fewer people explain how those dreams pay the rent. Discover more gritty punk releases in our punk section.
