Muse blast The Wow! Signal into space and somehow make the cosmos feel overcrowded

Muse’s The Wow! Signal gets 1 July review attention, and it sounds like a record determined to fill every inch of outer space with guitars, choirs, orchestras and high-stakes melodrama. Pitchfork frames the band’s 10th album as a return to gargantuan, ambivalent and overleveraged Muse form, which is both compliment and warning label. The record is titled after the mysterious 1977 radio frequency detected at Ohio State University, and the band apparently use that cosmic premise to go large on all fronts. Opener The Dark Forest brings in the Crouch End Festival Chorus and the London Metropolitan Orchestra, while later tracks continue the usual Muse tension between sincere ambition and ridiculous overreach. The interesting part is that Muse still sound uniquely committed to scale. Whether that scale thrills or collapses under its own gravity, The Wow! Signal seems less like an album than an intergalactic construction project with no planning committee.
