Myer U Clark steadies the boat on Simple Sailing

Myer U Clark’s Simple Sailing arrives as the final preview of Tinderbox, due 26 June through Broadside Hacks Recordings, and it sounds like a songwriter using an old image for a very current feeling. The Bristol indie folk artist frames the song around things going wrong unexpectedly and the spirit’s ability to centre itself when the destination suddenly slips out of reach. That boat metaphor could have been obvious, but it works because folk music has always understood travel as emotional language. A vessel that fails to arrive is also a person trying to stay upright. Clark has described the track as using more contemporary pop chords than he has previously written, which makes the single especially interesting within the album’s broader palette. Simple Sailing seems to sit between tradition and modernity, between old blues/folk reference points and a songwriter willing to let the structure drift somewhere newer. That tension is exactly where good indie folk can still surprise you.
