New York musician Nadia Faye releases "drift" today, a swirling new single co-produced with Max Morgen that explores attachment when somebody gives just enough affection to keep hope alive but never quite enough to make anything secure. In other words, modern romance remains fully operational.
Faye places carefully plucked guitar beneath pulsing bass and drums while chorus-soaked vocals and melodies create the sensation of emotional movement without an obvious destination. She describes the song as being swayed by fleeting affection and recognising that what is offered is insufficient while still struggling to leave it behind. The accompanying video, shot across two days in Los Angeles, deliberately contrasts bright, dreamlike imagery with isolation and darkness, visualising the difference between imagined connection and lived reality.
Faye released debut album Gardening in 2025, after which a period away from NYU coincided with another wave of writing. "drift" consequently feels less like an extension of that record than an artist moving into a more deliberate phase. Plenty of songs describe heartbreak after everything has ended. "drift" is more uncomfortable: it examines the stage where everybody knows something is not working and continues floating there anyway.
