A major Neil Young tribute project is preparing to release two additional volumes on November 6, with Heart of Gold: The Songs of Neil Young receiving renewed attention in the November weekly music preview. The forthcoming collections, Vol. 2: Out of the Blue and Vol. 3: Into the Black, bring together musicians from alternative rock, folk, Americana and contemporary independent music.
Participating artists include My Morning Jacket, Lucinda Williams, Los Lobos, Modest Mouse, Califone, MJ Lenderman, Kurt Vile, Devendra Banhart, Ben Gibbard, King Princess and Cold War Kids. The project celebrates Young's extensive songwriting catalogue while supporting the Bridge School, the California nonprofit established by Neil and Pegi Young in 1986 to provide educational and communication support for children with significant disabilities.
The recordings demonstrate how Young's music continues influencing artists working across different generations and musical styles. His catalogue includes intimate acoustic compositions, politically engaged folk rock and aggressive electric performances that helped establish an important foundation for alternative guitar music. The tribute format allows contemporary performers to reinterpret familiar material through their own artistic approaches rather than simply reproduce the original recordings. My Morning Jacket have collaborated with Preservation Hall Jazz Band on an interpretation of "Like a Hurricane", introducing a different instrumental character to one of Young's most recognisable compositions.
The two forthcoming volumes also illustrate how charitable music projects can connect established performers with younger independent artists while raising awareness of worthwhile causes. Both collections are scheduled for November 6 and are not being presented as already released. Neil Young has spent decades demonstrating that artistic independence and commercial success need not be mutually exclusive. Apparently his songs are also remarkably effective at persuading other musicians to contribute to a good cause.
