N’Famady Kouyaté brings balafon-driven modern Mandingue energy to Birmingham

N’Famady Kouyaté plays The Sunflower Lounge in Birmingham on 11 May, bringing his modern take on West African Mandingue music into a UK independent venue setting. Kouyaté, originally from Guinea and now based in Cardiff, is a master balafon player whose music connects griot tradition with jazz, pop, and indie influences.

He won the 2023 Glastonbury Emerging Talent Competition and has built a reputation for energetic live performances that move between cultural heritage and contemporary band dynamics. Independent scenes also include diasporic artists and cross-cultural projects.
