29 September 2026 – Old Friends Find Their Proper Sound on Warmly Distorted New Single To Me

New Jersey indie-rock trio Old Friends have returned with "To Me," their first new song since "Waiting" arrived in March, and apparently the six-month gap was useful. Nick Noto, Luke Chizek and Aaron Aitken describe themselves as finally hitting their stride, and the new single makes a decent case for the claim by placing warm, confessional songwriting underneath a layer of distorted garage-rock fuzz.

That sounds contradictory until you remember that some of the best indie rock has always behaved like a heartfelt conversation conducted beside an amplifier that is slightly too loud. Connection sits at the centre of the band's music, and "To Me" explores the effort required to close emotional distance between people rather than simply announcing that everybody should communicate better and waiting for the applause. Noto says the group increasingly sounds the way he always imagined it should, while his songwriting is becoming better at articulating what he actually wants to say.

That is an encouraging development for any band because technical polish is relatively easy to purchase; identity is annoyingly unavailable from music retailers. Old Friends' 'comfort rock' description is also rather fitting. "To Me" is neither aggressively retro nor desperate to chase whatever Spotify decided indie should sound like this week. It is warm, melodic guitar music about human closeness, delivered with enough distortion to stop things becoming sentimental wallpaper.
