Ōtepoti/Dunedin musician Reef Brazendale adds another entry to an already absurdly busy musical CV today with "Suspicion," the new single from his Out Of Luck project. Brazendale has become something of connective tissue within Dunedin's current independent scene, appearing across Bunchy's Big Score, Vagina Dry, Sivle Talk, Fastplant and Sick of You while presumably retaining at least several minutes per week for sleep.

Out Of Luck gives him room to place his own songwriting firmly at the front, and "Suspicion" leans enthusiastically into pop-punk adrenaline ahead of forthcoming album Please Leave The TV On, due October 15. The interesting part is how naturally the project fits into Dunedin's latest musical generation without simply reproducing the city's famous historical guitar sound.

Brazendale's scene is noisier, more stylistically promiscuous and happy to let hardcore, punk and pop exchange phone numbers. "Suspicion" reflects that cross-pollination. It is immediate, melodic and energetic enough to sound built for small rooms where the distinction between audience and band becomes increasingly theoretical. With the album less than two weeks away, the single functions as a final useful shove toward a project that deserves attention well beyond New Zealand. Reef may be Out Of Luck by name. His scheduling problem suggests otherwise.
