overpass step into Elsewhere, Always with arena-sized nerves and local-band hunger

overpass release Elsewhere, Always on 5 June, and the title already captures the strange emotional geography of a young guitar band trying to move from local momentum into something larger. The Birmingham group’s debut album arrives after a long build and carries the familiar but still powerful ingredients of modern UK indie rock: ringing guitars, big choruses, anxious energy and songs that sound designed to leave the practice room and test themselves against bigger walls. What makes a debut like this interesting is the tension between ambition and uncertainty. overpass sound like a band reaching for scale, but not yet so polished that the hunger has disappeared. That is often where guitar bands are most exciting: before the formula hardens, while the songs still feel like they are learning how far they can travel. Elsewhere, Always is a first proper flag in the ground.
