Peter Gabriel looks up for the Strawberry Moon and releases I Belong to the Sky

Peter Gabriel’s I Belong to the Sky arrives on 30 June in proper lunar fashion, timed to the Strawberry Moon and folded into the ongoing oi project of songs released around full moons. The Bright-Side Mix by Mark ‘Spike’ Stent is out now, with a Dark-Side Mix set for the next new moon, which keeps Gabriel’s release strategy charmingly ritualistic rather than merely promotional. The song itself began with a timpani tom-tom pattern inspired by Jazz on a Summer’s Day and drummer Chico Hamilton, giving it a calm, hypnotic root before Gabriel’s usual philosophical machinery starts turning. He frames the track around dreams leaving the nest and the accelerating speed with which ideas become material in a technological age. That is very Gabriel: cosmic, earnest, slightly odd and somehow still interested in whether imagination can change reality before the chorus lands.
