British indie-pop quartet PREP have returned with "Who Can I Turn To", a new single developed in collaboration with American producer and songwriter Daniel Tashian. The recording introduces another musical direction for a group internationally recognised for its polished combination of soul, city pop and contemporary electronic production. Tashian, whose credits include work with Kacey Musgraves, helped introduce acoustic and slide-guitar arrangements that contrast with PREP's established synthesizer-driven atmosphere.
The composition began as a relatively simple demo in London before developing during a songwriting trip to Nashville. The musicians arrived during an unusually severe winter storm, transforming the sessions into an unexpectedly memorable experience. Working together indoors while difficult conditions surrounded the studio encouraged a more intimate approach to arrangement and production. The resulting recording combines the group's familiar melodic sophistication with a warmer instrumental character influenced by Americana.
PREP have recently completed an extensive Asian tour, including performances in Taipei, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Manila and Bangkok. Their international audience remains particularly strong across Southeast Asia, where the quartet have developed a substantial following through repeated touring. The group are also considering how the collaborative approach developed during their recent EP sessions might influence a forthcoming third studio album.
"Who Can I Turn To" demonstrates that musical reinvention does not always require abandoning established strengths. Sometimes the most effective change involves adding a slide guitar and discovering that Nashville has considerably more to offer than cowboy hats and weather-related travel difficulties.
