Minneapolis alternative-rock trio Prize Horse have announced their signing to independent label Closed Casket Activities and released "The Big Picture", a new single introducing the darker direction of their forthcoming album. The band previously attracted attention with their 2024 debut Under Sound, a recording that combined shoegaze atmosphere with the heavier guitar textures associated with grunge and post-hardcore. Their latest composition suggests that the musicians have become increasingly interested in exploring the more aggressive possibilities of that combination.

According to the group, "The Big Picture" was the first song developed for the next album, with early demos dating back to 2023. Its arrangement gradually moves toward one of the heaviest passages they have recorded, providing a dramatic contrast with the more atmospheric sections. The lyrics examine days when seemingly ordinary decisions become overwhelming and the world appears determined to make every situation unnecessarily difficult.

Closed Casket Activities is an appropriate new home for the band, having developed a reputation for supporting adventurous hardcore and alternative musicians. Its catalogue includes The Body, Age of Apocalypse and Regional Justice Center. Prize Horse formed in 2021 and previously released the Welder EP before completing Under Sound. Their touring history includes performances alongside Superheaven, Glitterer, Greet Death and Chat Pile.

The band will visit Britain in December with Spite House, including performances in London, Bristol, Leeds, Manchester, Nottingham and Glasgow. No official release date has yet been confirmed for the forthcoming album. "The Big Picture" suggests that Prize Horse are not particularly interested in choosing between beautiful guitar atmospheres and the musical equivalent of a collapsing building. Fortunately, they appear capable of delivering both. Discover more heavy releases in our punk and hardcore directory.
