Melbourne post-punk outfit Radio Free Alice have released "Big Ideas," recruiting Water From Your Eyes vocalist Rachel Brown for a wiry call-and-response track that previews debut album What’s In Between, due October 30. Ironically, the song emerged when the band felt creatively stuck. A guitar riff broke the deadlock, a bassline followed, and Brown eventually became the obvious voice to answer the band across the track.
Radio Free Alice had already admired Water From Your Eyes after seeing them in Melbourne, so the collaboration feels less like algorithmic guest-star mathematics and more like musicians actually listening to one another. The band's increasingly chaotic DIY pop-up shows provide an equally interesting part of the story.
"Big Ideas" debuted publicly outside NOON Projects in Los Angeles' Chinatown, following an August performance beneath a South London railway bridge that attracted more than 500 people despite being announced only six hours beforehand. That is a useful contradiction for a group now working with producer Peter Katis and preparing an Atlantic Records debut: the machinery around Radio Free Alice is getting considerably larger while the band still behaves as though somebody handed them an extension lead and an interesting pavement. "Big Ideas" suggests that tension suits them rather well.
