Shark School make Selachimorpha feel like Galway guitar music with teeth

Shark School’s Selachimorpha gets Bandcamp Daily’s Album of the Day treatment on 24 June, and the title alone gives the Galway band an excellent aquatic threat level. Selachimorpha is the scientific superorder that includes sharks, which is a nicely nerdy way of saying the debut has teeth. Bandcamp frames the record as a major independent discovery, and the band’s own world seems built around sharp guitar energy, confrontation and a name that makes every chorus feel like it should arrive with dorsal fins. Galway’s independent music scene has never needed permission from bigger capitals to be interesting, and Shark School sound like another reason to look west. Debut albums work best when they announce not only songs but a temperament. Selachimorpha suggests this band’s temperament is fast, bright-eyed and not especially safe for swimmers.
