New Jersey alternative and emo band Sleep In. have returned with Tangled In The Vines, their third full-length and first album since 2019's The Stars on Your Ceiling. Released through Choke Artist, the record reconnects the intricate guitar interplay of the band's earlier work with a more immediate alternative-rock punch while digging through self-loathing, daydreaming, personal struggle and the peculiar social theatre of parties that should probably have ended two hours ago.
Lead single "It's All Ratfucked" provided a wonderfully delicately titled preview, but the larger album is intended to capture what guitarist Eric McNelis describes as the band's most authentic, vulnerable and enjoyable period of collaboration. Tangled In The Vines was recorded at The Gradwell House in Haddon Heights, New Jersey, with McNelis engineering and mixing and Dave Downham mastering.
Guest contributors include David Osterhout of Bike Routes, Zayna Youssef and Sean McCall of Sweet Pill, Will Schade and Reggie Duncan. That community around the record matters because Sleep In.'s music has always occupied the overlap between technical emo guitar language and the more direct pleasures of alternative rock. The band return to The Fest in Gainesville on 24 October for a showcase featuring Texas Is the Reason, I Am the Avalanche and Signals Midwest. Seven years is an impressively long nap for a band called Sleep In.; fortunately, Tangled In The Vines sounds very much awake.
